70 new electric vehicles will be added to NYC’s fleet, divided amongst a number of services, including the departments of parks and recreation, sanitation, and transportation, as well as both the NYPD and FDNY. The NYPD will be making use of the Chevy Volt, though initially it will be used for non-emergency services.
A total of 50 Volts will be joining the city’s fleet, along with 10 Ford Transit Connect vans and 10 Navi-star “E-star” utility trucks. The move is not only an attempt to reduce emissions amongst the city’s fleet, but also to spread awareness of electric vehicles to the citizens of New York.
“When provided with the facts, people become far more likely to choose an electric vehicle,” explained Mayor Bloomberg. “Our job is to ensure the public has the facts, ensure they can make their own decisions and ensure that if they want to drive an electric vehicle, we are providing the infrastructure needed.”
