The range-topping SL65 AMG will return to the Mercedes-Benz lineup for model year 2013, with the first cars slated to reach U.S. dealers in November. The 2013 SL65 AMG makes its world debut early next month at the 2012 New York Auto Show.
The redesigned SL65 AMG, with its twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 engine, will join the V8-powered SL550 and SL63 AMG. The 2013 SL550 goes on sale in May and starts at $106,375, including shipping. The 2013 SL63 AMG arrives in July; prices have not been released.
The 2012 SL63 AMG is priced from $141,315. The 2011 SL65 AMG was priced from $199,625.
The redesigned SL65 AMG has an even more potent version of the 6.0 V12, with new manifolds and blowers and a freer-flowing AMG sport exhaust system. Output climbs from 604 to 621 horsepower, while torque remains at 738 pound-feet.
Now mated to an AMG Speedshift Plus seven-speed sequential automatic, the 6.0 V12 enables the new SL65 AMG to rocket from zero to 60 in 3.9 seconds, while reaching a top speed of 186 mph.
The new seven-speed, combined with a stop-start function and a significant weight reduction, will result in better fuel economy, although official EPA ratings haven’t been released.
Mercedes-Benz and AMG also have upgraded the SL65 AMG’s chassis, fitting new electromechanical speed-sensitive sports steering, active sport suspension and high-performance brakes with six-piston fixed calipers in front and single-piston floating calipers in the rear. AMG carbon-ceramic brakes are optional.
The standard wheel/tire combination starts with AMG five-spoke polished alloy wheels painted titanium gray with 255/35R19 tires in front and 285/30R19s in the rear. Also available are matte-black AMG forged alloy rims wrapped in 255/35R19 rubber in front with 285/30R20s in back.
Mercedes-Benz has distinguished the 12-cylinder SL from its V8 sibling with a unique twin-blade grille and lots of high-gloss chrome accents, as well as a front skirt with larger air intakes and unique side sills.
The SL65 AMG’s cockpit is lavishly appointed in monochromatic or two-tone leather with specific diamond stitching on the seats, door panels and headliner, plus carbon-fiber and wood trim throughout the cabin.
Features include an AMG performance steering wheel, IWC analog clock, Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG surround-sound audio system, multicolor ambient lighting and a wide variety of advanced safety technologies. Among the options are an AMG Exterior Carbon Fiber package and AMG Performance Media.
